While p-diethylaminobenzaldehyde diphenylhydrazone, 1, efficiently photoconverts to 1-phenyl-3-(4-diethylamino-1-phenyl)-1,3-indazole, 2, with a quantum yield ø = 0.4 ± 0.1, excitation by a high energy electron beam (175 kV) induces very little chemistry. The G value for decomposition of 1 is <0.07; also, the products which are a result of the electron beam exposure differ from the photochemical products. A most likely cause of the extreme contrast between the u.v. and electron beam excitation is the ability of 1 to efficiently ionize and transport holes in the solid state. © 1987.
