The performance of interactive paging systems in general and Virtual Machine/System Product (VM/SP) systems with the High Performance Option (HPO) in particular depends upon locality of reference. This storage-management dependency, often considered in the context of individual programs, extends to a significant degree across most virtual-machine transactions. This paper investigates strategies to exploit locality of reference at the system level by analyzing page-reference strings gathered from live systems. Alternative strategies are evaluated using trace-driven simulations.
