It is hypothesized that two anatomically distinct structures - sensory and cognitive - are jointly responsible for perception. In normal individuals the sensory structure is developed at birth, whereas the cognitive one develops after birth under the influence of information received through the sensory structure. Only information that is consciously perceived and comprehended is essential for development of cognitive structure. Consequently, creation of an optimal substream of this cognizable information is an important objective for the therapist or teacher. © 1988.
