In my presentation, I will compare the light emission properties of photonic devices made of single carbon nanotubes to those made of highly aligned carbon nanotube arrays. I will show that advanced device concepts improve the control of charge carrier injection and reduce the impact of heterogeneities that are associated with individual carbon nanotubes. Also, I will discuss the light generation efficiencies achieved with the different device concepts and identify some of the challenges that have to be tackled for obtaining a significant performance improvement.
