Conformal solution theory is reformulated as an expansion in arbitrary functions of the usual molecular parameters. For pure fluids all coefficients are thermodynamic and the functions can be chosen to annul the second-order term. The rules derived are very simple and are shown to be accurate; they cast light on the success of mixture rules such as the van der Waals theory, and the different behaviour of expansions at constant volume and constant pressure. © 1972 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
