Constant-Current Versus Constant-Voltage VCM Drive Analysis
Abstract
A voice-coil-motor-driven actuator is analyzed for both constant-current and constant-voltage drive techniques. Through the use of dimensional analysis, the solutions to both drive methods are directly compared. This allows for quick evaluation of an actuator design. The analysis compares the actuator performance parameters, including seek time, switching time, and maximum angular velocity. Furthermore, the paper explores the power required to produce a seek-time objective. This includes an analysis of the power from the source and the power dissipated in the coil. Voltage and current requirements using either drive method are presented. © 1990 IEEE
