The friction and wear of ceramics under lightly-loaded, marginally-lubricated sliding-contact conditions are reviewed. The mechanism of ceramic friction and wear and the factors influencing them in these situations are identified and discussed with reference to the results presented in the literature. The implications to slidermaterial and thin-film rigid-disk overcoat material selection in magnetic recording devices are discussed. © 1990 by ASME.
