The magnetic susceptibilities of Cancer magister hemocyanin, oxyhemocyanin, and apohemocyanin were measured over the temperature range 1.5-77°K, and at 293°K, using a vibrating sample susceptometer and a modified Gouy balance. The samples were diamagnetic at all temperatures. The proton magnetic resonance spectra of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemocyanins were identical, within the limits of resolution of a 220-MHz spectrometer, when the samples were dissociated to fully active subunits of 80,000 molecular weight at 0.02 M sodium carbonate (pD 11.2). Thus, no difference in the magnetic state of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemocyanin was detectable under the conditions used. © 1973, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
