A measurement of the angular distribution (6) of the crystallographic c-axis of CsCdBr3 has been made using hole-burning Stark spectroscopy. Assuming this distribution to be Gaussian, we deduce a characteristic r.m.s. width ae of (11 ± 2)°. This measurement optically confirms the observation of stacking disorder by X-ray and electron diffraction in a pure crystal of the AMXg type and shows a new method for the characterization of high crystalline quality. © 1993 IOP Pubilishing Ltd.
