Multimode waveguide computer data links with self-pulsating laser diodes

Abstract

Interconnections using optical data links can enhance computer performance. These data links differ from telecommunications lightwave systems principally in their shorter transmission distance, tighter module packaging constraints, lower cost and robustness. For these reasons, multimode waveguides and GaAs OEIC appear an attractive technology for computer networks and optical wiring. However, the combination of high-coherence laser diodes and multimode waveguides with mode-selective loss results in modal noise and the possibility of unacceptable bit error rate floors. This paper describes a solution to this problem, using self-pulsating laser diodes. These offer the opportunity to develop robust economical high-speed data links, tolerant of poor splices and connectors and insensitive to reflections.
