Recently, it was shown that semiconductor vertical cavity layers can be used to make wavelength-selective waveguides for possible WDM application. Compared to devices with lithographically defined grating, these structures may be easier to fabricate and are already integrated with active semiconductor material for gain or photodetection. In this paper, a novel structure where the transfer of optical power between two waveguides occurs through a semiconductor cavity and the transfer position depends on wavelength was demonstrated. Such a structure may be configured to provide wavelength dependent gain or absorption for WDM applications.
