Paramagnetic-resonance measurements for Gd3+ in CdSe and CdTe are reported. The resonance parameters for Gd3+ are compared with those of the isoelectronic ion Eu2+ in the same crystals. The bnm parameters characterizing the splitting of the S728 ground state are much larger for Gd3+ than for Eu2+ in both CdSe and CdTe. The g values for Gd3+ are significantly lower than those for Eu2+. The presently available theories of the splitting of the S728 state are considered in the interpretation of these results. © 1965 The American Physical Society.
