A description is given of the E-compiler, which accepts a restricted subset of APL, and produces E-code that is the instruction-set of a parallel machine of multifunction architecture. Its aim is to study the feasibility of automatic extraction of parallelism from high-level language specifications. Extensive type analysis based on local and global data flow analysis is an important feature of this compiler. Some of the techniques developed are also useful later in the data dependency analysis for scheduling computations to be executed in parallel.
