Terminating fringes indicate the presence of dislocations in high-resolution transmission electron microscope images of imperfect single grains. For inter-phase and grain boundaries the number of terminating fringes depends on the relative orientation of the lattice fringes and the interface plane, the Burgers vectors of interfacial dislocations, and the nature of any interface steps. A method has been developed for predicting and analysing lattice images of interfaces and used to interpret more fully a number of previously published results. © 1982 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
