The wavelength-modulated reflectivity spectrum of Cr2O3 is found to exhibit rich structure attributable to internal transitions of the Cr3+ ion and charge-transfer processes. It is noted that the crystal field splittings of the Cr3+ ion are related to the charge-transfer band gaps for several of the oxide and sulphide chromium-containing insulators. © 1972.
