During the past decade, there has been a phenomenal increase in the use of interactive time-sharing systems. However, the recent introduction of powerful desk-top computers is starting to revolutionize this environment. Yorktown's preliminary experiences suggest that the next few years will be marked by (1) attempts to integrate desk-top workstations with interactive time-sharing systems as well as (2) the need for computing centers to provide new services while still maintaining most of their current ones. How the IBM Personal Computer is being used at Yorktown, and some of the new services that are being provided to support it are described, including the use of interactive systems for file servers and a company-wide data base of IBM PC information and software.
