Ching-Huei Tsou, Ph.D., is a research scientist and manager of the biomedical natural language processing (NLP) group within IBM Research's Healthcare and Life Sciences department. With expertise in machine learning, NLP, and software engineering, he has played a crucial role in redirecting IBM's Jeopardy-winning research team toward leveraging NLP for healthcare advancements.
Dr. Tsou has led teams consisting of AI researchers, software engineers, and medical experts, working on projects dedicated to constructing health informatics solutions. His primary focus lies in extracting clinical insights and generating concise summaries from unstructured patient records and medical literature, facilitating clinical decision-making and expediting biomedical research. Currently, Dr. Tsou's research centers around training transformer-based biomedical foundation models using diverse data modalities, including multi-omics. This approach holds immense potential in accelerating drug discovery and development.
Prior to joining IBM, Dr. Tsou served as the principal software architect at LightPharma Inc., a software company in Cambridge, MA, specializing in pharmaceutical manufacturing process control. Additionally, he worked as a research scientist at MIT Auto-ID lab during the same period. These experiences gave him valuable insights at the intersection of AI and healthcare.
Dr. Tsou holds a Ph.D. and M.Eng. in Information Technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, complemented by a Bachelor of Science degree from National Taiwan University.
