I am a Senior Research Scientist in IBM Research at the T.J. Watson Research Center, NY. My work sits at the intersection of optimization theory and algorithms, artificial intelligence, and operations research. I am particularly interested in AI for mathematics, optimization for quantum computing, nonconvex sparse learning, stochastic optimization, anomaly detection, data-driven decision making, and optimization for power systems.
My research has been translated into several IBM products and platforms, including Asset Investment Planning for Maximo, anomaly detection for SROM, production optimization solutions, Maximo dispatching and scheduling, and synthetic data generation for optimization modeling used in training IBM Granite 4.0.
I received a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Florida in 2010 under the supervision of Prof. William Hager, an M.S. in Computational Engineering from the National University of Singapore in 2024, and a B.S. in Mathematics from Vietnam National University, Hanoi in 2021.
Within IBM, I currently serve as a subtheme co-lead for “AI for Mathematics and Optimization” (since 2025) and previously co-led the “Resource Planning and Optimization” subtheme (2022–2023). I am a member of the editorial board of the journal Computational Optimization and Applications, a two-time recipient of the Pat Goldberg Award (2013 and 2023), and have been recognized as an IBM Master Inventor since 2021.
