Francesca Rossi

Bio

Francesca Rossi is an IBM fellow and the IBM AI Ethics Global Leader. She works at the T.J. Watson IBM Research Lab, New York. Before joining IBM, she has been a professor of computer science at the University of Padova, Italy, for 20 years.


Her research interests focus on artificial intelligence, specifically they include constraint reasoning, preferences, multi-agent systems, computational social choice, collective decision making, and AI value alignment. She is also interested in ethical issues in the development and behaviour of AI systems. She has published over 220 scientific articles in journals and conference proceedings, and as book chapters. She has co-authored a book and she has edited 17 volumes, between conference proceedings, collections of contributions, special issues of journals, and a handbook.


She is a fellow of both the worldwide association of AI (AAAI) and of the European one (EurAI).
She has been president of IJCAI (International Joint Conference on AI) and of AAAI,
and the Editor in Chief of the Journal of AI Research. She is in the steering committee of the AAAI/ACM Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society, that she chaired in 2023. She also chaired the AAAI conference in 2020.

Besides her AI research activities, Francesca also works with many stakeholders on AI ethics and governance. She has been a member of the European Commission High Level Expert Group on AI. She is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Future of Life Institute and of the board of the Partnership on AI. She co-chairs the Responsible AI working group of the Global Partnership on AI and the OECD Expert group on AI Futures. She is a member of the AI advisory network of the city of New York and of the scientific advisory board of the CMU Block center and of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
