I am a Distinguished Research Scientist and the Manager of Foundations of Probability, Dynamics, and Control within the Mathematical Sciences Department of IBM Research at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center (Yorktown Heights, NY). I also served as Director of the Center for Optimization under Uncertainty Research across IBM Research. I received my Ph.D. degree from the University of Washington (Seattle, WA). I have been an adjunct faculty member in the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering at Cornell Tech (New York, NY), and the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University (New York, NY). I have also held visiting positions at various academic institutions.
My research interests broadly concern the mathematical foundations of the analysis, modeling and optimization of the design, control and performance of complex systems under uncertainty, including stochastic processes, probability theory, stochastic networks, stochastic optimization, stochastic optimal control, dynamical systems, stochastic analysis, optimal transport, robust optimization, linear algebra, stochastic matrix theory, mathematical statistics, graph theory, information theory, learning theory, queueing theory, mathematics of AI, algorithms, computational mathematics, and stochastic resource allocation/scheduling, as well as their extensive applications across areas such as decision making under uncertainty, quantum computing, business analytics and optimization, data analytics, financial analytics, cybersecurity, smarter planet technologies, smart energy/grid technologies, smarter workforce/salesforce, health analytics, social media analytics, data-centric and high-performance computing, computer systems, communication networks and mobile devices, revenue and risk management, and manufacturing and service operations management.
I am an elected Fellow of SIAM, INFORMS, ACM, IEEE, AAIA and AIIA, and the author of more than 300 technical publications and more than 70 issued/filed patents and disclosures. My work has been recognized through awards such as The (Biennial) Best Publication in Applied Probability Award (INFORMS Applied Probability Society), The Daniel H. Wagner Prize (INFORMS), The Gold Stevie® Award (Sales Automation Solution), 9 best paper awards, 19 keynote/plenary presentations, 28 major IBM technical awards, and 43 IBM invention awards. I am a member of AAAS, AMS, AAIA (Fellow), ACM (Fellow), Bernoulli Society for Mathematical Statistics and Probability, DIMACS, IEEE (Fellow), IMS, INFORMS (Fellow), IFIP WG 7.3 (elected) and SIAM (Fellow), also being elected to serve as Chair of IFIP WG 7.3 and as Chair of the Computer Performance Foundation (2014 – 2024). I currently serve as Editor-in-Chief of Stochastic Models and have served or currently serve on the editorial/advisory boards of Operations Research, Performance Evaluation, Stochastic Models, Transactions on Modeling and Performance Evaluation of Computing Systems, Frontiers in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Proceedings of the ACM on Measurement and Analysis of Computing Systems, and INFORMS-Springer Book Series. I also currently serve on the Board of Directors of INFORMS (Vice President of Sections and Societies) and on the Board of Directors of the American Automatic Control Council (INFORMS/APS Director), and have served on the Board of Directors of ACM SIGMETRICS (1997 – 1999, 2007 – 2009, 2009 – 2011). I have served as a mentor through Ph.D. advising/committees of 11 students and as a mentor through postdoctoral/internship positions of 46 individuals, and have chaired/organized numerous international conferences in stochastic processes, applied probability, stochastic optimization/control and related applications.
