High density recording requires well-defined written transitions on a high coercivity disk, leading to good signal-to-noise ratio and error rate. Increasing linear density and faster access time drives rapid acceleration of the data rate. In this work we review the design, process and performance of IBM's advanced write heads for high density and high data rate applications.
