HPC networks: Challenges and the role of optics

Abstract

Cost, rather than power, poses the main challenge for exascale HPC interconnection networks. To deliver byte-per-FLOP ratios on par with today's petaflop-scale systems, price-performance of active optical links must improve by two orders of magnitude.
