Ulisses is an IBM Distinguished Engineer, IBM Quantum Ambassador, and the director of the Global Technology Outlook-GTO, which examines in great depth the current trajectories of new technologies in IBM Research and marketplace, concentrating on trends that could be disruptive or the signals of change. The GTO has proved to be remarkably visionary and has allowed IBM to make sound decisions and investments in future technology directions and has been used to drive IBM’s investment in R&D and in IBM over the years. Ulisses was the director of IBM Research in Brazil (2012-2019) where his top priorities were to stimulate innovation in key areas of information technology application to industries, quickly bring these innovations to the marketplace to sustain and grow IBM’s businesses, and to apply these innovation to help IBM clients succeed. Ulisses joined IBM T. J Watson Research Center over 25 years ago and held a series of management and technical positions. Ulisses has over 90+ articles published in the literature and 35 patents in computational geosciences, numerical modelling of geological processes, hydrogeology and optimization of natural resources. He earned his PhD in 1994 from Columbia University in the city of New York, MSc from Federal University of Ouro Preto in 1987, and undergraduate degree in geology from University of São Paulo in 1983. He is a member of the IBM Academy of Technology and the IBM Industry Academy.
