Role of OEICs in commercial applications

Abstract

Opto-Electronic Integrated Circuits (OEICs) will likely play a major role in future optical communication systems especially in optical receivers at shorter wavelengths. It has seen extensive commercial application lately. The inclusion of optical components such as optical detectors and emitters on the same chip as high speed circuitry has in general difficult. One exception to this situation is the integration of the MSM detector with GaAs. MESFET circuitry. In this case LSI level of integration has been achieved and high performance OEICs are already in production. This paper focuses on this particular case.
